Orkney Seas

From our friend Umblepie:
The weather in Orkney over the last few days has been wet, windy and generally wild! Last night the Kirkwall lifeboat was called out to rescue a yacht which had broken its anchors whilst riding out the storm in Mill Bay, Stronsay. The yacht I believe, had several on board, and with its sails shredded, had to be towed by the lifeboat into Stronsay harbour. The sea was very rough, resulting in one of the lifeboat crew falling on deck and injuring his back. The Air/Sea Rescue helicopter attended, collected the injured man and conveyed him away to hospital. This all happened during the hours of darkness and in atrocious weather conditions. Thank God for these brave and skilled rescuers, and may He bless them, and may Our Blessed Lady, Mary, Star of the Sea, protect and guide them.

A Great Novena

Since we put up the online form for sending petitions and thanksgivings to Our Mother of Perpetual Succour one week ago, there has been an absolute flood of letters coming in. Yesterday at the Perpetual Novena to Our Mother of Perpetual Succour, they were all offered together with our own to our Holy Mother. At the Novena, the petitions are read, if not marked private, and then the Fathers and Brothers of the Sons of the Most Holy Redeemer offer them to Our Lady, under the great title of Perpetual Succour, and earnestly beseech her clemency for all those who have written to her, that she may deign to answer their petitions and cries for help.

The petitions are read before Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament, Our Lady’s image and the community.

We implore Our Lord Jesus Christ and his Holy Mother to hear the prayers of their devoted servants.

The very great number of petitions and thanksgivings which came in over the last week. Keep it up! Remember that only good can come of it. No mother in the world desires to receive a letter from her child so much as Our Mother of Perpetual Succour. Write with humility and constancy, and she cannot fail to hear your pleas.

Remember O most gracious Virgin Mary,
that never was it known,
that anyone who fled to Thy protection,
implored Thine aid or sought Thine intercession was left unaided.
Inspired by this confidence I fly to Thee, O Virgin of virgins my Mother.
To Thee I come before Thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful.
O Mother of the Word Incarnate despise not my petitions,
But in Thy mercy hear and answer me. Amen

An Unusual Fish

When we fish around Papa Stronsay and Stronsay our usual catch would be Coley, Mackerel and Cod. However, just the other day something came up which we had never seen before and couldn’t identify. If anyone can tell us what it is please just leave a comment.

It was very brightly coloured, weighed 500g and was 340mm long...

...and it had a formidable set of teeth!

Any help identifying this unusual fish would be appreciated.

100 years ago to the day

The Edenmore.

The end of the era of sailing ships was drawing closer — a demise that was hastened as the three masted sailing vessel Edenmore was wrecked on the rocks of Papa Stronsay Island on the feast of the Holy Rosary, 7th October 1909, 100 years ago to the day. The local people on the neighbouring island of Stronsay rescued all 25 of the crew. Some brief additional information can be found here.

Miraculous cure from liver cancer!

Another Miracle!
Thank you
dear
Mother of Perpetual Succour!

On 28 June last we received an urgent e-mail message for prayers:

"The urgent matter is that N. has recently been diagnosed with cancer that has spread to and metastasized in his liver. N. and Z. his wife are battling the disease by every means available, most importantly through prayer. That is my reason for writing to you. ...

Z. came by the house this afternoon with the request that I write and ask for you to offer Masses for N.'s healing. She is a strong believer in the special power of the Traditional Latin Mass. ...
If you can please remember N. when you offer the Holy Sacrifice of Our Lord Jesus Christ to God Our Father, it will be appreciated in ways that words cannot express. By the way, N. is not Catholic, yet he is a devout Christian and one of the most good and upright men that I know."

Then "out of the Blue"...

On 29 September (just 3 months later)
"I just spoke with our friend Z. N.'s cancer, which was Stage 4 and had spread to his liver, is 99.9% gone. He still has to undergo a few more rounds of chemo, but it's basically a mop-up from here: the enemy has been thoroughly routed. N.'s doctor believes that his recovery is nothing short of miraculous.

Needless to say, the Masses that you offered on N.'s behalf played a significant role in bringing about this miracle. Z. would like to thank you personally, but she is emotionally spent right now. ..."
Miracles do happen!
Even the doctor said so!
Thanks be to God and Mary!
