More from the Papa Stronsay greenhouse

The war continues in Papa Stronsay's green house. This time we are introducing ladybirds and ladybird larvae, as well as Aphidius and Aphidoletes in a bid to control the greenfly!

They all come in the mail. These ladybirds were shipped with Cheerios!

Br. Jean Marie, F.SS.R. introduces them to their new home.

They wasted no time in finding a snack!

The ladybird larvae.

We also found this other bug in the greenhouse and it's also doing a great job with the greenfly. Does anyone know what it is?

As we left the greenhouse yesterday evening, we were treated to a lovely rainbow!

The ladybird in the movie seems to be an asian ladybird. If so, I would be careful with them. On the continent the native european ladybirds are being extincted by the asian ladybirds, who were brought here to kill of greenflys.

Thanks for your concern B! No need to fear here though, the ladybirds are all native. From the supplier’s website:

Adult Ladybirds and Ladybird Larvae - We supply NATIVE BRITSH Adalia Bipunctata ladybirds as ADULTS and LARVAE ready for release in your garden!

**Whew!** That was intense. I almost fainted about halfway through watching the ladybug devour that evil greenfly.

And people think you monks live such a dull, retired life!!
