May he rest in peace.

Cardinal Mayer wrote a fascinating preface to the first 'modern' edition of the Nocturnale Romanum in 2001.

I knew Cardinal Mayer and yes, he was truly a gentleman and a holy man of the Church. How appropriate and ironic that he should die on the feast of St Lius V, pope. As stated in the Book of Liturgy of the Hours "...promoted the spread of the faith and renewed divine worship." May this great son of the Church enjoy the beatific vision and pray for us. He was a dear friend of our wonderful Pope, Benedict XVI.

His Eminence was a true and faithful friend to many religious communities when they had no other true and faithful friends. He kept not a few communities from going off the deep end.

God rest his faithful soul!
