Rejoice with us!

Dear Friends,

For the love of Jesus and Mary
rejoice with us!

We rejoice because of the Beatification today of
not now the Venerable, but the
Blessed Maria Celeste Crostarosa.

Rejoice with us!
Today is the 8th anniversary of our
reconciliation with the Holy See in 2008
thanks to His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI.

Misericordias Domini in aeternum cantabo.
The mercies of the Lord I will sing for ever. (Ps. 88:2)

On this anniversary of that great grace,
from which we have never looked back,
I publicly announce the joyful news
that we have received yet another grace
for which we are most deeply grateful to God.

On 18th May 2016,
His Lordship, the Bishop of Aberdeen,
Dom Hugh Gilbert, O.S.B.
signed the Decree of Approval
for the Constitution of our Congregation.

May God reward him exceedingly!

Deo gratias et Mariae! -
Thanks be to God and to Mary!

In His Great Goodness

God in His great goodness
through the prayers of Our Lady and St Joseph
has given Holland Farm in Stronsay
 into our possession.

We give Him our humble thanks
that such a great gift should be added
to our monastery in Papa Stronsay.

We also offer our loving thanksgiving to Our Lady, Most Holy Mary,
who never ceases to watch over Her children's
spiritual and financial necessities.
Countless are the times that She has prayed for us
and we have experienced so many miracles
as a result of Her prayers.

If all men and women would accept Holy Mary as their Mother
how happy the world would be!
She is always looking out for us and Her prayers to God
in our behalf are always heard, even with miracles.

This is the reason that through the centuries Her countless children
have given Her so many loving titles such as:
Star of the Sea
Mother of Perpetual Succour
Flower of Carmel
Mother Most Loving
Refuge of Sinners
Mother of the Afflicted and so very many more.

Her titles are humble expressions of love from Her grateful children.

Today we too publicly offer our humble thanks to so loving a Mother.

To God alone be all Glory!
Our Thanksgiving is offered  to Jesus through Mary.

Associated Members of the Sons of the Most Holy Redeemer

The founding of a Third Order for the Congregation of the Sons of the Most Holy Redeemer is provided for in our Constitutions.  Until such a time as there are a sufficient number of committed individuals to warrant the creation of such a Third Order, we have thought it well to establish individual Associated Members of the Congregation of the Sons of the Most Holy Redeemer.  Members are associated with the Congregation on a one-to-one basis.

The Associated Members will be the pioneers of the future Third Order foreseen in our Constitutions. The Associated Members have a special recognised place in our Congregation and already as Associated Members they will live a Spiritual Rule that we hope would become part of the Constitutions of the future Third Order. Becoming an Associated Member takes the form of a commitment to the Spiritual Rule.

Saint Alphonsus Maria de Liguori

Associated Members  must be Catholics over the age of 18 years, they must apply in writing to become Associated Members and be received by the Rector Major into the Book of the Associated Members of the Congregation.

RULES OF THE ASSOCIATED MEMBERS

1. Following St Alphonsus, they make the Three Hail Mary’s in the morning upon rising, and in the evening before retiring, together with the Alphonsian prayer: Most Holy Immaculate to which they add an Our Father and a Hail Mary in honour of their patron for the year.

2. They begin each year by reading the Eternal Maxims of St Alphonsus for meditation taking one point a day. When these have been read they take up, in the same way, other works of the holy Doctor (The Passion and Death of Jesus Christ, The Holy Eucharist, The Way of Salvation etc). Every day they also read a short extract from his Glories of Mary.

3. According to their possibilities, they pray the Little Office of the Blessed Virgin Mary, assuring this Office, in Latin or English to help complete the prayer of the Congregation.

4. Once a week they also pray, or replace the Little Office of the Blessed Virgin, with the Office for the Dead.

5. They faithfully receive Holy Communion only on the tongue.

6. Women Members also continue the Apostolic tradition of covering their heads in Church.

7. They keep the image of Our Mother of Perpetual Succour in a place of honour in their homes. Following the example of St Alphonsus they wear the scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel.

8. Following St Alphonsus and the Redemptorist saints, they are lovers of ejaculatory prayer.

9. They write an email or letter to the Rector Major every month to keep contact with the Congregation.

10. They offer a decade of the Holy Rosary every day for the intentions of the Congregation and for the salvation of the most abandoned souls.

11. The Associated Members make their commitment for one year at a time. After five years it may become permanent or continue on an annual basis. An Associated Member may freely terminate his or her Associated Membership by a letter to the Rector Major. Likewise, the Rector Major may freely terminate an Associated Member’s Membership by writing a letter to him or her.

12. The Associated Members as private individuals do not undertake any projects or works in the name of the Congregation. If a group of Associated Members is formed it remains on the level of the fraternal support and friendships of the individual Associated Members; it does not become a moral body and may not engage in any works in the name of the Congregation or in the name of a group of Associate Members.

New Personal Parish

On the feast of the Assumption of Our Lady the Priestly Fraternity of Saint Peter (F.S.S.P.) had their church of the Maternal Heart of Mary, in Sydney Australia, constituted a personal parish by George Cardinal Pell, archbishop of Sydney.  Fr Duncan Wong, F.S.S.P. was appointed as the parish priest.  Being a personal parish of the F.S.S.P. it is dedicated exclusively to the celebration of the Traditional Mass.

The first Solemn High Mass to be celebrated in the newly erected parish was celebrated by the parish priest, Fr Wong.  Fr Damonn Sypher F.S.S.P. was Deacon, and Mr Daniel Mould F.S.S.P. acted as Subdeacon.

Communiqué on the Conclave

Days of silence ...
'...to pray for Pope Benedict,
to pray that the Holy Spirit enlighten the College of Cardinals,
to pray for the future Pope,
trusting that the fate of the barque of St. Peter
is in the hands of God.'

A Vatican Radio translation
of a Secretary of State communiqué on conclave,
issued Saturday, 23 February, 2013:

Communiqué of the Secretariat of State

“The freedom of the College of Cardinals, which alone, under the law, is responsible for the election of the Roman Pontiff, has always been strongly defended by the Holy See, as a guarantee of a choice based on evaluations solely for the good of the Church.

“Over the centuries, the Cardinals have faced multiple forms of pressure exerted on the individual voters and the same College, with the aim of conditioning decisions, to bend them to a political or worldly logic.

“If in the past it was the so-called superpowers, namely States, that sought to condition the election of the Pope in their favour, today there is an attempt to apply the weight of public opinion, often on the basis of assessments that fail to capture the spiritual aspect of this moment in the life of the Church.

“It is regrettable that, as we draw near to the beginning of the Conclave when Cardinal electors shall be bound in conscience and before God, to freely express their choice, news reports abound which are often unverified or unverifiable, or completely false, provoking damage to people and institutions.

“It is in moments such as these, that Catholics are called to focus on what is essential: to pray for Pope Benedict, to pray that the Holy Spirit enlighten the College of Cardinals, to pray for the future Pope, trusting that the fate of the barque of St. Peter is in the hands of God."

Here is the same text in the original Italian, for those of you who would like to check the one against the other:

COMUNICATO DELLA SEGRETERIA DI STATO

His Eminence Tarcisio Cardinal Bertone
The Secretary of State.

Decree of Erection

Text of the above Document.

Decree of erection
Of a
Religious institute of diocesan right

The Papa Stronsay community known as the Sons of the Most Holy Redeemer was founded on 2nd August 1988 residing on the Isle of Sheppey in England.  In 1994 they moved to Joinville in France and from there in 1999 came to their present location on the Isle of Papa Stronsay within the archipelago of the Orkney Isles.

In 2008 in response to the Apostolic Letter, Summorum Pontificum, of his Holiness Pope Benedict XVI, given Motu Proprio at St Peter’s on 7th July 2007, three priests of the community sought regularisation of their situation and a majority of the community signed a Formula of Adherence, which ended the schismatic state and brought them into full communion with the Catholic Church.

In September 2011, I as Bishop of Aberdeen and accompanied by Rev. Stuart P. Chalmers, Vicar General of the Diocese, made a pastoral visit to the community.  After further consultation with the Holy See it was agreed to begin the course of action leading to the canonical recognition of the Sons of the Most Holy Redeemer.

Beginning on 23rd April 2012 a Canonical Visitation took place undertaken by myself as Bishop of Aberdeen and accompanied by Dom Benedict Hardy, O.S.B. Prior of the Abbey of Pluscarden; the results of which were duly reported to Cardinal William Levada President of the Pontifical Commission Ecclesia Dei.  Consequently, in accord with the letter dated 12th June 2012, Prot. N. 27/2006, from Mons Guido Pozzo, secretary of the Pontifical Commission Ecclesia Dei and after consulting the Council of Priests of the diocese of Aberdeen:

I, Hugh Gilbert, O.S.B, by the grace of God Bishop of Aberdeen, decree that the community known as the Sons of the Most Holy Redeemer, be erected as a Religious Institute of Diocesan right in accordance with c 579 of the Code of Canon Law 1983.  The Institute will be subject to all other applicable norms of the said code and governed by the statutes of the said community previously approved by the Holy See.

Given this day 15th August in the year of Our Lord 2012

Rt Rev. Hugh Gilbert, O.S.B.
Bishop of Aberdeen

Prot No. 01/2012 L.S.
