Painting the chapel and Passion Sunday

Over the last week we have taken the opportunity of painting Our Lady's Chapel on Stronsay in preparation for Easter. We decided to change it from the all-white it had been and try and give it some character.

Brothers painting the ceiling.

Br. Nicodemus Mary, F.SS.R. gives a second coat.

The first stars are sprayed. They are the eight-pointed star from the veil of Our Mother of Perpetual Succour.

Marking the positions of the stars.

As the job approaches, the sanctuary can begin to be cleared.

The last star...

...very satisfying!

Mass of Passion Sunday on Stronsay.

O, Most Precious Blood of Jesus, Be our salvation!

What a transformation! - and a really beautiful result.

I love ceilings coloured blue with stars. I fell in love with it when I visited Santa Maria sopra Minerva in Rome years ago. Now I just long to find a church nearer me with even a chapel painted like that.

Lovely result - but I hope the person using his cassock as coveralls has a spare!

I know a very strict Orthodox monastery where the brethren never wear cassocks when doing very messy work like this. (The support themselves with a dairy farm, btw.)

So beautiful - multiplying the star on Our Lady's mantle!
I always thought Passion Sunday was another name for Palm Sunday - or is that in the "new" liturgy? How could I have believed this for so long? Where did I go wrong?

Ah, beautiful results for a job well done! I'm sure Jesus, Mary, and Joseph are looking down with pleasure from Heaven on its completion. May God grant everyone on Papa Stronsay a very blessed Holy Week, with immense blessings for tomorrow when we celebrate the Institution of the Holy Eucharist!
