Stone upon Stone

Drystone walls need attention now and again to keep them in good condition.  Some of the many walls on Papa Stronsay were built or repaired with speed in mind rather than quality, and so they don't last as long as they should.

This wall was damaged by some sheep.  Although the hole they created by jumping over wasn't enormous in itself, this section of wall was in great need of attention anyway.  Br Ernest, our stonemason, pulled the wall down until he reached a sound section on both sides. From there

From there he could clear the ground, and begin rebuilding.

The final stones are placed.

With the last stones in place, Br Xavier and Br Ernest use the skid steer bucket to remove the unused stones from around the base of the newly completed repair.
